Onions are used in many dishes. They have a distinctive, strong flavour and pungent odour which is mellowes by cooking. Onions have medicinal uses too.
I Wonder Why?
The onion makes us cry when sliced. This is because the amino acid in the onion cells. When sliced, amino acid in the onion cells escapes, and froms a gas. The gas rises to reach our eyes , and reacts with the water present im the eyes, to form sulfuric acid. Sulfuric acid is an irritant which stings the sensitive nerves in our eyes. This causes tears to flow in an attempt to wash out the irritant.
