Awesome question, considering that there are so many stars in space, why in the world is it black? The most common answer is that the earth is illuminated by the sun in the day because we have an atmosphere with many particles in it — like water droplets, dust, etc. Light rays fall on these, reflect off some, refract off some.
These scattered rays bathe our world in light. Space, however is a vaccum. There is no air in it, no particles to diffuse the light, hence it is always dark. Also, although there are many stars, they are very far away from each other and it takes millions of years for the light from some of them to reach other parts of space.
