Botany is the study of plant life. It ges its name from a Greek word that means 'Herbs' since in ancient times Botany dealt mainly with the study of plants as food.


Primitives medicine men and with doctors were the first people to specialize in the study of plants for medicinal as well as other properties. In fact, Botany has been closely liked with medicine for centuries.


In the sixteenth century , people began to record their and Botany became a more exact science. Charles Darwin, the nineteenth century English scientist, played an important role in throwing light on the evolution of plants.


Today, there are different specialized branches of Botany Paleobotony interprets plant evolution from the study of fossils. Plant Physiology studies the way plants breathe and make food, while Plant Pathology is concerned with the study of plant diseases. Palynology is the study of modern and fossil pollen and spores and the study of liver worts and mosses known as Bryology.
