Penicillin is one of the earliest and probably also one of the most widely used antibiotics. So when Sir Alexander Fleming accidentally came across this “miracle drug” in 1928, he pretty much revolutionised
medical science. Fleming was a bacteriologist, he studied bacteria. He happened to leave a plate of bacteria (called Staphylococcus) unattended on his desk. When he returned, he observed a greenish-blue fungus on the bacteria. The bacteria touched by the fungus had been killed off. He managed to grow this fungus separately and realised that it worked the same magic on disease-causing bacteria.
