We can say that the Neanderthals were the ancestors of our ancestors! They appeared thousands of years before modern man.

Neanderthals lived Europe and Central Asia between 2,30,000 and 30,000 years ago longer than modern human have lived on Earth. They lived during the Ice Age, when vast sheets of ice covered many northern parts of world.

The term "Neanderthal" comes from the Neander Valley near Dusseldorf, Germany. This is where scientist found the first Neanderthal fossils in 1856.

The Neanderthals lived during Ice Age, When most Europe and North America were covered with snow and ice. They used fire to keep themselves warm, and also to hunt mammoths. These huge animals were difficult to catch, so the Neanderthals would cleverly throw burning logs to chase them over the cliffs. The mammoths would tumble off the cliffs, and be killed
