Tobacco was used as money in and around the American colonies of Virginia, Maryland and North Carolina for nearly 200 years. Nearly all business transactions in Maryland were carried out with tobacco being used as money. Of course, tobacco had the disadvantage that it was not easy to carry around, and gradually, tobacco money was replaced by coins and notes.
