The most gentle-natured of all Asian Elephant. The Borneo Pygmy has paid dearly for its small size and inquisitive character. A desperate scramble by conservation organizations world wide is underway to ensure that large tracks of land in Borneo are protected. The reason? The Borneo Pygmy Elephant, one of the rarest and least understood animals on the plant. Right now much of this rare animals Natural Habitat little legal protection and, thanks to logging and unchecked human development is being reduced at an alarming rate this comes off the back of years of poaching and unsympathetic tourism with 14 elephants being found dead in January 2013, apparently poisoned at the hands of humans. All this comes without us even really knowing that much about the species and certainly nowhere near as much as Asian elephants. In fact scientist currently even unsure of the pygmy's origin and evidence gathered to establish whether they are native to Borneo or were an historic foreign introduction are inconclusive. Unfortunately, if the population keeps declining at its present rate, we might never know how this unique species developed in the past. More information
