Pictures and Texts

There are a number of pictures used in your textbooks. They are not simply pictures. They function as texts too. They give us an idea of the text that we intend to read. ‘A picture is worth a thousand words.’ Pictures produce direct, truthful and bold images that tell the stories. The illustrations used in the textbooks are treated as texts. They also need to be processed in the class along with the texts given. The multi-coloured pictures will generate interest in the students and will also help them form mental pictures of the characters described in the stories and poems. Teachers will use these pictures for meaningful interaction with the learners.

Reading comprehension can also be tested using these pictures.
Look at the picture given below.
Can you imagine what the story will be?
How will you make a text out of this picture?
Develop a story based on the picture.
Two old people, one man and a lady. How does the story develop?
See what wonders a pciture can do?
Now, look at this picture. It is a picture given in the tenth standard textbook.

Can you make a story out of this picture?
Try it. Or try for a poem too.
Guess what is the picture about?
What do you see in the picture?
List the figures you see in the picture.
Is there a house, a tree?
Is it a hut or a terrace house?
Can you identify the actions?
What do the peasants do?
What do they have in their hands?
What are they searching for?
Which being is seen on the mother?
What might have happened to the mother?
Like this, study the picture in detail before you form a text from it. May be the text will be similar to the text prepared by the author or not. It doesn’t matter whether the text you prepared is similar to the text of the author. But the important thing is that you can prepare a text from a picture.

This is what happens in a classroom regarding English especially in lower classes. Find out all the details given in the picture and form ideas about it. Note down the ideas that come to your mind. Blow up the ideas and you will get a draft text. Now, read the text again and correct the errors if any.
You can prepare a good text from the picture you get. This can be practised with any picture you get. Try and experience.
