Yes they do. The most obvious use is, of course, to identify criminals. But that is a very recent development. Fingerprints have been used for identification purpose only since 1901.
Even otherwise, fingerprints do serve a purpose in the lives, even though it is not so well know. The ridges and grooves that form the fingerprint give roughness to the skin surface, providing you a better grip, making it easier to pick things up. And they are essential for the appreciation of what is touched.
