Why are fruit flies important for scientists?

For us fruit flies are nothing but kitchen pests who bother us a lot. However, scientists actually breed fruit flies for
experiments. With a short lifespan they make it easier for the scientists to make observations through generations. Despite the obvious differences between a fly and a human, the species share many genes and proteins, making the fruit fly ideal for unraveling biological mysteries. From cancer to depression, they provide a cost-effective and efficient system for testing promising therapies for most diseases.
