How do mother animals know their own babies?

Babies of a particular species look very similar, but the mother still recognises them. How? As soon as the baby is born, the mother smells them and she usually keeps track of her babies by scent. A mother can distinguish her baby from a hundreds of others by scent alone. Most species like the elephant, tiger, snow leopard, monkey or a rhino, all keep their babies close to them for a certain period of time till they are old enough to go into the world on their own. During this period the mother is usually protective and aggressive towards strangers.
